Vinyl Privacy Fence Styles: Choosing the Right Look for Your Home

When you decide to install a privacy fence, you’re doing more than just marking a property line or keeping the dog in the yard—you’re choosing the backdrop for your life. Whether it’s a summer BBQ or a quiet morning with a cup of coffee, your fence is essentially the “walls” of your outdoor living room.

At Midwest Fence, we believe a privacy fence should be an architectural extension of your home. However, walk through most neighborhoods in the Twin Cities, and you’ll see “bargain” vinyl fences that look like shiny, extruded plastic. They don’t just look cheap; they feel out of place.

That’s why we focus on Architectural Grade solutions. We’ve narrowed our primary collections down to two distinct looks: the Chesterfield and the Hartford. Both offer the security of a solid wall, but they speak very different design languages.

The Chesterfield Collection: The “Wood” Look Without the Work

If you love the rugged, natural texture of a cedar fence but shudder at the thought of spending your weekends with a pressure washer and a bucket of stain, the Chesterfield is your answer.

This isn’t just a printed pattern on a flat surface. The Chesterfield features CertaGrain® technology. This is a physical, molded texture that mimics the actual grain and character of real timber.

Why does texture matter? As our in-house expert Fence Man Dan explains, the biggest giveaway of a low-quality fence is that “plastic shine.” When sunlight hits a smooth, cheap vinyl surface, it reflects off like a mirror, creating a harsh glare. By utilizing a physical wood grain texture, the Chesterfield kills that reflective “plastic-y” look you see on retail-grade fencing. Because it is physically textured, it scatters that sunlight just like real wood does.

This gives the fence a beautiful “Matte” finish that blends into your landscaping rather than competing with it. And Matte is a distinct choice to make for a Vinyl fence in contrast to a Glossy finish. When you run your hand across it, you feel the grain—not a slick, oily surface.

The Hartford Collection: Sleek, Modern, and Crisp

Not every home is a fit for the rustic look of wood grain. If you live in a more contemporary development—think the clean lines of new builds in Lakeville or Woodbury—the Hartford Collection might be your perfect match.

The Hartford offers a smooth, professional finish. It’s “Classic” in every sense of the word. While it offers a clean look, it doesn’t compromise on strength, utilizing oversized 2″ x 7″ rails to ensure the panels remain rigid and secure. Because the surface is perfectly smooth, it is exceptionally easy to maintain. A quick rinse with a garden hose is usually all it takes to keep it looking like the day it was installed. It provides a sharp, uniform look that makes green grass and colorful flower beds pop.

Beyond White: The Beauty of Wood-Grain Blends

For a long time, choosing vinyl meant choosing “hospital white.” Those days are over. Through our 75-year legacy of sourcing the best materials, we now offer multi-chromatic color blends that are virtually indistinguishable from stained wood.

  • Arctic Blend: A cool, sophisticated grey that looks like weathered coastal wood.
  • Sierra Blend: A warm tan that gives you that classic “Cedar” look.
  • Weathered Blend: A deep, dark wood grain for those who want a high-contrast, high-end look.

In Minnesota, dark colors are a challenge because our summer sun is intense. Other companies might sell you a dark fence that fades into a dull grey in three years. We use ColorLast® fade protection—an acrylic-based coating chemically bonded to the PVC—to ensure those rich “Arctic” and “Sierra” tones stay vibrant for decades.

Midwest Fence Builds to Last

Midwest Fence understands that the most frequent reason vinyl fences fail is the foundations. Because privacy fences are solid walls, they act like giant sails in a Minnesota windstorm. If a builder takes shortcuts to save a few dollars, the fence won’t survive the first big storm of the season. Performance and durability begin with that foundation; using undersized supports simply isn’t an option for a solid privacy wall.

Why Midwest Fence doesn’t take shortcuts:

  • The Tongue-and-Groove Advantage: Our panels don’t just sit next to each other; they lock together. This creates a seamless, gap-free wall. It looks better and provides 100% privacy, but it also creates a lot of weight and wind resistance.
  • Steel-Reinforced Bottom Rails: Because these panels are heavy and catch a lot of wind, many “bargain” fences will eventually start to “smile”—where the bottom rail sags toward the dirt. To prevent this, Midwest Fence reinforces the bottom rail with a heavy-duty steel channel. This internal support is the only way to keep your fence lines perfectly straight year after year and prevent that dreaded sag.
  • Deep-Set Concrete: We anchor these heavy privacy styles with deep-set concrete bases rather than driven pipes. In our shifting Minnesota clay, a solid concrete footing for every post is the only way to ensure your “sail” doesn’t turn into a “lean-to” after a windy afternoon.

Experience the 20-Acre Difference

We believe you should see what you’re buying. Most contractors operate out of a truck and a brochure. Midwest Fence operates out of a 7-acre facility in South St. Paul.

Come feel the difference between the smooth Hartford and the textured Chesterfield for yourself. See the 8-foot wide sections standing in the natural sun so you can see exactly how Arctic Blend or Sierra Blend looks in real-world lighting. This is where you can verify the “Midwest Difference” for yourself.
